21 and growning up
2009-04-11 | Filed Under Matthew |
Much to my mum’s surprise, I have made it to 21 years of age and mum is still sane. She thinks this is some kind of special miracle! I had a big party at my new house and got lots of toy men for presents (my favorite).
I am transitioning well in to my group home with Mark and Robert. I am now there for just over a week at a time, and eventually will live there all the time and come home to visit mum and the tickle man every second weekend.
Mum seems to be coping really well with the change (I think mum could be a little bit autistic too!), and is finding lots of things to try and do to keep her busy while I am away. So far she has tried knitting, cooking classes and Spanish classes, pilates and the gym. Next she is trying belly dancing!

Moving out with friends
2008-11-08 | Filed Under Matthew |
I’m moving out into my own house with Robert and Mark. I went to school with Robert, but Mark will be a new friend. I wont move out straight away, mum has developed a “transition plan” so that I don’t get too stressed with the changes. I will start with just weekend visits every second weekend.
On Friday we set up my bedroom in my new house, with new furniture, its looks good (see pics). The house is very very big and has 3 living areas, 4 bedrooms and a study, for just the 3 of us. Oh and of course the staff that work at our new house as well.
Mum is trying to be very brave about me moving into the house, but I can tell she is a bit sad. I have heard her tell other people that she knows that it is right and time for me to move into the house, because I am now a grown up and I can live with other grown up boys like people who aren’t autistic do. And she knows that when she gets old and cant look after me anymore, I will be settled in my own house, and it wont be a problem. But mum is still a bit sad.
My first sleep over in the house is next weekend, I am excited because I have toys in my new house, a new computer and a new guitar. I just know that I am going to have fun with the new staff as well.
Wish me luck!

Autism and change is not a good mix!
2008-07-28 | Filed Under Matthew |
It’s been a few weeks of change, and I really don’t like change!
Change #1: Mum has changed her job and is now working somewhere else
Change #2: Because mum has changed her job, she now has to drop me off somewhere else every morning
Change #3: Chris (who has been looking after me for the past 10 years in the afternoons) is no longer looking after me
Change #4: I now come straight home from my day program with a carer, 3 days per week, and the other 2 days, mum meets my bus
CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE!
I have let mum know just how unhappy I have been with the changes by displaying some challenging behaviours. Mum had to have a talk to me about this because she wasn’t impressed.
I am slowly trying to get use to the change, but every little thing lately, that goes wrong makes me upset. Mum tells me I will get use to all the change…but I am still NOT happy!….more toys and iceream please!

The week that was
2008-06-22 | Filed Under Matthew |
In summary, here are the things that I have learnt this week:
- I don’t like being stuck in elevators
- once you start to pick at the edge of the laminate in the kitchen, you just cant stop
- I am just the right size to fit through the toilet window
On Thursday when I was out and about with my friends at my day program, we needed to use the lift to get to where we were going. The lift decided to stop working with us stuck inside. My friends and I were not very happy and I became very distressed. We were stuck for 20 minutes and I was so upset that I refused ice-creams and diet coke (my most favourite things in the world) and couldn’t do my drumming lesson!
Sometimes when I am in one of my funny moods, I try to find things that make me laugh. While I waiting for my sausage rolls to cook in the oven, I noticed that the edge of the laminate on the kitchen cupboard was sticking out. So….I decided to pick and pull at it to see what happened, and guess what? the whole length of laminate came off! I was so impressed with this, that I did all the edges of the cupboards so that they all looked nice. Unfortunately, mum was not impressed when she saw the kitchen and had to get the tickle man to glue all the edging back on.
I will do anything in the search for a can or bottle of diet coke. I had my suspicions that there was some in the garage. The only trouble is, mum keeps the door to the garage locked. I have learnt however that I am just the right size to fit through the toilet window. So this weekend, my niece (baby Mia) was visiting and mum was busy putting her down for her nap, so I decided to make my escape. Only trouble was, she heard me making lots of noise and caught me climbing out the window. As usual, she wasn’t very happy, and now the window is locked closed. Its only a matter of time though, till I find another escape route!

Can you hear the drums?
2008-06-02 | Filed Under Matthew |
I take drumming classes! Not the sort of drumming classes where people have drum kits and are part of band. The drumming classes that I do are the kind where you get to act silly and make lots of weird noises. African drumming!
Chris (the lady that has cared for me for years in the afternoons) takes me on Thursday afternoon’s. Mum was a little worried at first, but I love it. I get to squeal without anyone telling me to be quiet, and I can bang things in my own rhythm and everybody thinks I’m cool.
The teachers have funny hair and clothes and they really like me because I like to dance around and make noises without worrying what everybody thinks….perfect for African drumming. The nice people that I show my unique drumming style to, are called Inrhythm.

Here I am again…
2008-06-01 | Filed Under Matthew |
Here we go again, trying to keep my diary updated! I think my last post was back in 2006, when mum promised to keep it updated more regularly! hmmm!
My diary has now turned into a blog! Apparently blog’s are all the rage now, so here I am, blogging, with the help of mum of course!
I am now 20 years old, mum keeps muttering that she has no idea how all her children got so old (my little brother Joel is now 18!).
Mum promises to try and keep this updated, and will move over all the stuff from the old site to the new blog over the next few weeks. Fingers crossed!
At some point mum will work out how she can put my pictures up on here….it may take a while.
